Back at the village, Manu Kumar had again developed a high fever, and Tej was sitting by his side. He was half asleep and was speaking incoherently in his sleep. Tej was dapping Manuâs head with a damp cloth to keep his forehead from warming up a lot when Manika entered the room.
âThis fever shows the same symptoms as before, Mani.â Tej was worried.
Manikaâs face bore a foreboding expression. âI have bad news. Many other people in the village are reporting the same symptoms again. The fever is coming back. Their skin is turning light green, with red blisters all over the body. Three old people who were already very weak are on their deathbeds.â
âThis should not have happened. I killed Nefe. All this should have gone.â Tej stood up. âI need to go back. The Kuleens are the only ones who can help us. They are waging a great war against Kshins. They must have some cure.â
âWaitâdonât go blind this time. Let me time-read.â
âRead Jake Morales. He is a Kuleen fighter. Focus on December 25th, 2057. No ⦠no, they must be partying. Focus on December 26th, the morning.â
Manika closed her eyes. Tej could see her eyeballs moving. A motley of expressions ran across her face in a sequence, as if she was living each moment she saw. She smiled for a few instants, but gradually, her expressions turned sad. A tear rolled down her cheek.
Tej gulped. Sheâs time-reading Kuleens. I left them in a festive spirit. What could make her cry?
âThey are dead. I could see this man Jake and several others around him lying in a pool of blood. Each body has been shattered with hundreds of bullet holes.â
âHow is this possible?â Tejâs throat was heavy. âGo a few hours back. See what happened.â
âI tried. I got the same blank visions.â
âKshins! They were there.â Tej said nervously to himself. âBut who could it be? I killed Nefe myself. Itâs impossible.â
Manika could barely control her tears. She had rarely seen so much gore in a time-vision. âI saw symbols written on the wall in blood. Seems like one of the Kuleens tried to give a message before he or she died. But the symbols look like English letters. I donât completely understand that language, at least the written part of it.â
âI do. Can you draw those symbols for me?â Tej fumbled through the room and found a piece of paper and charcoal, which he handed to Manika.
Manika closed her eyes and focused on the symbols.
Tej read those symbols. ân e f ⦠Nefe.â He jammed his fists in his forehead. Manika placed her hand on his shoulder.
âWe have lost everything, Manika. Weâre defeated.â Tej sat down on the ground. He took deep breaths as he sobbed, and tears erupted from his eyes. âShe is alive. She butchered all of them. Kshins are indeed invincible.â
âNo, Tej. Have hope.â Manika knew her words sounded as hollow as her hope, but she couldnât bear to see Tej breaking down in front of her.
